Rival groups confronted each other, with stones, sticks and other objects reportedly used during the clashes. Several vehicles were damaged, while party workers and police personnel sustained injuries. Police reportedly fired a round in the air to disperse the groups and restore order. Midhun Reddy was moved to a safer location amid the tension.
However, the two parties offered sharply different accounts of the confrontation. The YSRCP alleged that TDP supporters attacked the MP’s convoy and obstructed its candidates from filing nominations. TDP leaders, in turn, accused Midhun Reddy’s supporters of provoking the violence and attacking their workers. Police said the YSRCP MP and his supporters had allegedly violated election-related restrictions by entering the nomination centre area with a large convoy.
Rayachoti witnessed another bout of violence, with several cars set on fire near the YSRCP office in the town’s SN Colony area. Vehicles were damaged as tensions spread, prompting police to intervene and strengthen security. Both incidents occurred as political parties mobilised supporters for the municipal elections.
The clashes have raised concerns over the safety of candidates and the conduct of the nomination process. The YSRCP sought the intervention of the State Election Commission, demanding action against those responsible and adequate protection for candidates. TDP leaders also called for action against those they accused of instigating the violence.
With rival parties trading allegations, the police face the immediate task of identifying those involved, investigating the damage and ensuring that candidates can submit nominations without intimidation. The incidents have cast a shadow over the election process, with authorities under pressure to prevent further clashes as nominations continue.
