ABV's past in TDP government fuels questions over political loyalties
VIJAYAWADA: Retired IPS officer A B Venkateswara Rao’s political journey has revived questions about his perceived proximity to TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, though no publicly established evidence proves that he acted as a secret political operative for the party.

Rao served as intelligence chief during the TDP government between 2014 and 2019. His appointment became controversial after opposition leaders accused him of favouring the ruling party. The Election Commission transferred him ahead of the 2019 Assembly elections following complaints over alleged bias.
His subsequent suspension and the case concerning surveillance equipment further intensified the political controversy. However, legal proceedings and political allegations must be assessed separately.
Rao’s current political positioning has added another dimension to the debate. His criticism of both Naidu and Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, along with his independent mayoral bid backed by opposition parties, complicates attempts to place him within a single political camp.
Whether his campaign reflects independent political ambitions or personal grievances remains a matter of political interpretation, not established fact.
