No casualties in Godavari region as cyclone winds ease
KAKINADA/YANAM: The Godavari region heaved a sigh of relief on Wednesday morning as cyclone Arnab’s winds weakened, allowing rescue teams to clear roads blocked by uprooted trees. No casualties had been reported in the region so far, even as several areas bore the brunt of the storm.

Road clearance operations gained momentum on the Kakinada-Amalapuram stretch, where disaster response personnel removed scores of fallen trees to restore traffic movement. In Yanam, uprooted trees blocked streets across the town following the high-speed winds that accompanied the cyclone’s landfall.
The lull in rainfall allowed residents in Kakinada and Yanam to venture outdoors, while personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) stepped up restoration work.
Authorities advised residents of Kakinada, Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema and West Godavari districts to remain indoors until 11 am as a precautionary measure.
The storm also dealt a blow to horticulture in parts of Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district, where banana and coconut plantations suffered damage due to strong winds. The extent of crop losses was yet to be assessed.
Meanwhile, Kakinada police rescued four employees who were stranded overnight at a Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) godown at Kakinada Anchorage Port after water entered the premises.
According to an official release issued by Kakinada SP G Bindhu Madhav, the employees were identified as Chintala Durga Prasad, Bommidi Anand Kumar, Soorreddi Nagaraju and Ganga Appala Raju.
The four spent the night inside the godown as water entered the campus. Police personnel reached the spot on Wednesday and brought them to safety. All four were reported safe and reunited with their families. They hail from Yanam and Kakinada.
With winds easing, the immediate focus shifted to clearing blocked roads, restoring access to affected neighbourhoods and assessing damage to plantations and other property across the region.
