The court indicated that the legislator should approach the Andhra Pradesh High Court for relief in the circumstances of the case. The proceedings relate to the killing of Subrahmanyam, whose death triggered a major controversy in the state.
Reports also said Ananta Babu had previously secured bail but was arrested again over allegations that he attempted to influence witnesses. Those allegations, too, must be assessed through the legal process.
The case remains closely watched because of the seriousness of the charges and the questions surrounding witness protection and the progress of the trial.
The Supreme Court’s decision does not amount to a final determination of guilt; the criminal proceedings remain subject to the outcome of the case.
