AI boom crosses $ 3 billion at TCS, but India's IT jobs at risk

BENGALURU: Artificial intelligence is emerging as a powerful new revenue engine for India's largest IT services company, but the technology boom is unfolding against a backdrop of cautious client spending and changing workforce requirements.

AI boom crosses $ 3 billion at TCS, but India's IT jobs at risk

Representative image.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported annualised AI revenue of more than $3.1 billion in the September quarter, highlighting the growing appetite among businesses for AI-led transformation. Its dollar revenue rose 2.4% year-on-year to $7.6 billion, while its total contract value increased to $9.6 billion.

Yet the numbers tell a more complicated story. Sequential constant-currency revenue growth was just 0.5%, underlining the challenges facing the traditional outsourcing business.

For India's technology workforce, the shift presents both opportunity and uncertainty. Companies need professionals who can build, deploy and manage AI systems, while routine technology tasks face increasing automation.

TCS added 4,258 employees during the quarter and hired 10,000 freshers. The key question now is whether AI will create enough new opportunities to offset the work it transforms.
